Featured Athlete: AJ Oliver

Name a person who inspires you to be a better skier?

Franz Klammer, let ‘er buck.

In lieu of our 70th film, what’s your most memorable or favorite Warren Miller film or segment – past or present?

I always remember the segment from Vertical Reality shot in India. Neon one-piece suits, riding elephants, locals skiing on handmade skis…. It's got it all.

What would you do if you won the lottery?

Buy a “mom and pap” ski resort and let everyone ski for free.

Best meal you can cook?

Simple. Chicken, sautéd veggies, with maybe pasta or couscous.

Favorite chairlift and why?

Challenger, at Big Sky. You are able to choose from multiple aspects and exposure. Something is always skiing well. Also, it’s great for turning laps. The 9min ride is perfect to catch your breath before you do it again.

The most interesting thing you’ve read or seen this year? (books, podcasts, TV shows)

I’ll go with the most recent. The Fall Line by Nathaniel Vinton.

A fictitious character you most identify with from a book, movie, etc. and why?

Anyone of the little rascals… I’m always looking for a way out of trouble.

Skiing in the Monashees, exploring new terrain, and of course skiing with industry legend Glen Plake.

Gear you are loving right now, on or off the ski slopes, and why?

Camera, I’m getting back into photography. New Year's resolution!

In lieu of our 70th film, what’s your most memorable or favorite Warren Miller film or segment – past or present?

I recall little 10 year old me being stoked watching the Burton smalls segment in Warren Miller Playground at Mammoth. I used to go see the movie every year in Tacoma, and seeing kids my age ripping at mammoth the big screen got me so fired up to get on a board that season.

What would you do if you won the lottery?

I'd stake out some property, probably in idaho/wyoming with a little airstrip, some sleds, skatepark, all the necessary components for an epic compound.

Best meal you can cook?

Grilled Chicken on a nice bed of Arugala. Keep it simple

Favorite chairlift and why?

Chair 6 at Crystal Mountain, leads to The King. I owe a lot of my riding growth to that terrain

Fictitious character you most identify with from a book, movie, etc. and why?

Otto from Rocket Power. Childhood inspiration.

Highlight memory from filming with WME for this year's film?

One evening we pulled off a sunset shoot on the Jump line at Eldora. It is so sick when it can be a productive session for filming with everyone feeding off each others energy and landing. Throwing a private jump line, epic lighting, and sled laps into the mix makes it that much better!

Gear you are loving right now, on or off the ski slopes, and why?

All my Burton AK gear has been killer, finally figured out a fit i like and its trusty all winter from resort to touring to sledding. Can't beat staying' dry and being comfy out there

What is a cause you care about that you'd love to share with the Warren Miller audience?

The Chill Foundation. Chill works to remove barriers to accessing boardsports and supports continued progression (Surf, Skate, Snow Etc.) for youth that may be in a difficult situation or not have the means of doing so. It helps them see past their current situation to a new light, and learn a variety of skills as well as hopping on a board and experiencing that growth from riding.

The North Face FutureLight series since it's the first time that layering has become really easy and I can forget about what I'm wearing when I'm wearing it.

Protecting the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge from oil and gas drilling. It's a human rights and wildlife, wilderness, public lands issue that gives us a chance to do the right thing in this last great expanse of Alaska instead of repeat the imperialistic approach our nation is so known for. alaskawild.org #protectthearcticrefuge ourarcticrefuge.org

Highlight memory from filming with WME for this year's film?
I have too many to count. First, the epic pow heli-ski day on my second-day filming. Second, spending the night at the Argentiere Hut in Chamonix and waking up in darkness to start filming. Third, jumping out of a helicopter to get to one of the lines I was about to ski.

Gear you are loving right now, on or off the ski slopes, and why?
My Rossignol skis- all of them because they are solid, turn fast and are always improving (SL, GS, Black Ops, Touring set up) My Helly Hansen set up because it is stylish, functional and it keeps getting cooler every year. My jet boil because who doesn’t like warm beverages everywhere they go. My headlamp because... I just love it in a nerdy sort of way.

I have a huge passion for trying to keep girls in skiing. I am so sad when I see girls drop out of racing for a number of different reasons.
