Three Real-World Tips About Mountain Living

What to consider for your future piece of paradise.

Whether it’s buying a dream ski chalet, family vacation home, or mountain retreat, there’s a lot to consider. Here are a few basics to help you get started.

Digitally downstream

Though we’d all like not be chained 24/7 to our digital devices, these days your cell phone, laptop, and tablet, are probably as indispensable to your daily life as, well, eating and breathing.

Be aware that in mountain towns, cell phone coverage and wi-fi service can be as rugged as the soaring peaks all around you, which are the common culprits behind dropped service, dead zones, and uneven coverage. Towns, resorts, and businesses are upgrading technology all the time, and have made huge progress in recent years. But do your due diligence before you buy a place. How’s the cell coverage in your new neighborhood? What carriers work best? How about in downtown? Or on the slopes and the hiking trails? It’s a great excuse to knock on a few doors and chat up your potential neighbors. And maybe enjoy a cup of coffee and homemade cookies in the process.

Access and convenience

One of the huge attractions of mountain living is that these beautiful communities are, of course, nestled away in the mountains. Yes, that’s obvious, but so are the ramifications of a remote location that too often can be overlooked, minimized, or simply ignored by visitors or homebuyers.

The first residents of these towns often moved there to be left alone, as the mountains are a great place to hide out. Just ask Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. So what are your primary goals for your mountain home? Are you looking for a frequent weekend family getaway? Or perhaps a secluded snowy retreat far away from the hustle and flow of civilization?

A family retreat needs to be accessible to everyone—or as many members of your family as possible. Jumping on a long flight or packing a car for a full-day drive might not seem like a big deal to you, but parents with young kids or elderly grandparents might think differently. It’s all about location, location, location. Also, for a family vacation home, you’ll want plenty of activities for different age groups. And if you’re looking for your vacation home to also double as an investment rental property, be realistic on how often you would like to use it—or conversely, how often you plan to put it into the rental pool.

According to the 2017 Vacation Home Buyer’s Survey by the National Association of Realtors, vacation properties, on average, are located 200 miles from the buyer’s primary residence. That sounds right, as it translates into about a three to four-hour drive.

Consider your long-term goals too. Do you plan to sell the place after the kids grow up? Or would you like to eventually move there after retirement? In 2017, about one-third of vacation home buyers said they plan to do exactly that.

Mountain Landscape

Check out the town—and the seasons.

Ski with the locals. Stroll the downtown core. Grab a bite at the popular breakfast restaurant to watch how the town wakes up. Later buy a few drinks at the local tavern, tip well, and ask the bartender for the real intel on the town.

Better yet, do all of the above during different seasons. Weather, travel times, crowds, and the overall vibe of a town or resort are different depending on the season. Winter isn’t summer, and neither are similar to the so-called shoulder seasons between the two. That’s half the fun of mountain living, as the town changes along with the seasons.

And, of course, run the financial numbers with your accountant before you make a move.

“Climb to Glory” Legacy of the 10th Mountain Ski Troopers

We collaborated with The Colorado Ski Museum to produce a special, 45-minute documentary that tells the story of the 10th Mountain Division Ski Troopers and how they transformed the U.S. Ski Industry after World War II.

Available to stream for Outside+ Members HERE

To purchase a copy of "Climb to Glory" in a BluRay/DVD combo pack, please visit our the Colorado Ski and Snowboard Museum as they have the last remaining copies.

Produced by Warren Miller Entertainment in partnership with the Colorado Ski and Snowboard Museum, Climb To Glory tells the story of the 10th Mountain Division Ski Troopers and how they championed the U.S. Ski Industry following World War II. The Mountain Division came into existence on July 13, 1943 at an Army base in the Colorado Rockies known as “Camp Hale”. The Division trained at 9,200 feet above sea level and honed their skills to fight and survive under the most brutal mountain conditions. After participating in a major turning point in the War, these heroes returned home from Italy as pioneering individuals and helped expand skiing into a lifestyle sport with ski resort development, product innovation, instruction and everything in between. Narrated by Olympian and future Colorado Ski & Snowboard Hall of Fame inductee Jeremy Bloom and inspired by Warren Miller Athlete Chris Anthony, Climb to Glory highlights the 10th Mountain Division Vets’ astounding impact on our country and the ski industry while incorporating the fun and flair of Warren Miller films.

Warren Miller's ALL Time Trailer

Documenting snow stoke since 1949. Winter starts here.

2025 Warren Miller Film Tour

Screenings to be held in 300+ U.S. cities from October to December, annually.

Warren Miller’s 76th Film Announced

The new film from Warren Miller "SNO-CIETY" celebrates the community and culture of snowsports, proving winter is more than just snow.

This fall will mark the 76th annual feature film from Warren Miller Entertainment. Since the first film debuted in 1949, Warren Miller has been capturing the stories of skiers and riders across the globe. Each fall, the film tour celebrates the start of the season with the largest gathering of snow enthusiasts.

The film, titled “SNO-CIETY,” is not just about snow—it’s about the tight-knit community, shared rituals, and sense of belonging that come with snow culture. The film explores a world where snow creates its own society, bound together by mountain life, adventure, and seasonal tradition.

“SNO-CIETY” takes viewers on a journey from the Scottish Highlands and the streets of Finland to the back bowls of Whitewater, BC, and a local hill-turned-terrain park in downtown Denver. With a unique, fun, and motivational narrative, the film celebrates both the action and the camaraderie of winter. A diverse lineup of Olympians, urban riders, and local legends including Judd Henkes, Britta Winans, and many more, uncover what drives us to chase powder year after year.

"This film is a deep dive into the culture behind the sport," said Josh Haskins, Warren Miller executive producer. "It captures the humor, approachable personalities, and memorable moments that make our community so unique. It is a celebration of what binds us together."

Tickets will go on sale starting Sept. 3 with the Outside+ member presale. Outside+ subscribers receive first dibs and 20% off tickets. General on sale will happen on Sept. 10.

The 76th Warren Miller film tour will kick off on October 18, 2025 with a special World Premiere screening at Abravenal Hall in Salt Lake City, followed by shows at more than 300 cities across North America and internationally. Tour stops will feature premium prizes, trips, and giveaways, plus athlete appearances, interactive sponsor experiences, and an unmatched community gathering.

The 76th annual Warren Miller film and film tour is proudly supported in partnership with adidas TERREX, ABERFELDY Single Malt Scotch Whisky, Atomic, Scout Motors, Oakley, Sorel, Sun Valley Resort, and Glade Optics.
