About the Athlete:

Snowboarding phenomenon Nick Russell likes to call the Sierra Nevada backcountry his home mountain. He is a big mountain snowboarder who’s made a name for himself by stepping out of his comfort zone and charging steep lines and couloirs in places like Denali, Utah and beyond. This year, he is featured in his first Warren Miller film, “Future Retro” in a segment that includes fellow snowboarders and Protect Our Winters (POW) ambassadors Elena Hight and Danny Davis. The three set out with Ice Axe Expeditions and toured the landscape at the end of the Earth in Antarctica.

No More “S” Word:

  • Once the “S” word is off limits, Amie asks Nick about what it was like to travel with POW to Antarctica to see firsthand the effects of climate change and what he took away from that experience.

  • Nick goes on to talk about why travel means so much to him, why he shaved his beard off for the first time in years, how his mom instilled his love for stones and unique crystal and the mythological world of “Lemurians” on Mt. Shasta.

  • After that, Nick divulges the fact that he’s encountered UFOs...

  • From there, Amie asks Nick to share the best advice he’s ever taken to heart (hint: it has to do with patience) and the worst advice he ever received (hint: it involves ignoring his gut instincts).

  • Then Amie asks Nick what he’s putting his attention towards and Nick talks about how he’s trying to be more intentional with taking care of his body with things like less phone time, eating right and finding small routines to help stay in touch with himself.

  • Following that, Amie and Nick swap stories about encountering bears while camping and Nick shares the highs of climbing a lot this summer, standing on top of Grand Teton last winter and the low of having an accident in the backcountry.

  • Finally, Nick wraps it up by telling Amie a story of getting lost in the middle of Mexico where one extra friendly local saves the day (and the trip).
