Chairlift Interview: Jenn Berg

We skied with Mountain Hardwear and Volkl athlete Jenn Berg in her natural habitat: the mountains of Utah. She reveals her favorite line, ingredients for a perfect day, and plans for the season.

Jenn Berg is sweet. Like, want-to-pinch-her-cheeks sweet. But her skiing is anything but. For example, she only rides men’s skis: the Volkl Kuro, taller than she is, at 185 cms long. And with appearances in multiple Warren Miller Entertainment films and a long career as a big mountain skier, Jenn Berg is one of the most recognizable names in the game. We rode a chairlift in Utah with her to talk about life, skiing, and indecision.

What does your season look like?

It’s not yet set in stone, but I’ll be shooting a lot of photos for my sponsors and probably some video for marketing, web-based stuff. I do a lot with Volkl, and I’ll be travelling to a few on-snow events in Colorado and Vermont. I work with a lot of photographers in Utah, like Scott Markewitz and my husband Peter O’Brien, as well as Lee Cohen, Steve Lloyd, Brent Benson, and Adam Clarke, so I’ll be shooting with them most of the season.

What’s your home resort?

Alta and Snowbird. I can’t decide which I like better, but lucky for me, they’re connected.

Favorite run at Altabird?

Something off of Baldy— typically Keyhole. I’ll start at Alta and do a short hike, then drop through Keyhole to the Snowbird tram. The terrain is a mixed bag— it starts with some tight trees, then opens to a field. You get into a small air or a chute, then it aprons out.

What’s your favorite part of being a pro skier?

It’s getting to live the dream. We have excellent gear, warm clothes, fast skis, ski passes, and we’re just out shredding. We get to travel, experience new terrain, meet new people, and indulge in different cultures.

Describe your perfect day on the hill.

I would say my perfect day is shredding with really fun friends, skiing good snow. We’d all be on the same page, feeling eachother’s energy, skiing at the same speed and caliber, living it up, being stoked.
