Fiddles and Freshies

The Fifth Annual WinterWonderGrass Festival Colorado gets two thumbs up.

Onesies, banjos, and dreadlocked and bearded ski bums jam-packed the quaint western town of Steamboat Springs, Colorado the weekend of February 24—26, 2017 as musicians and music-lovers alike gathered for the sold out, Fifth Annual WinterWonderGrass Colorado Festival. Microbrews were poured and bands like Leftover Salmon, The Infamous Stringdusters, Sam Bush, Rapidgrass, Elephant Revival and Railroad Earth performed near the base of the resort as festival-goers came and went. Skiers and riders popped into on-mountain lodges at various times of the day to find their favorite bands playing for free amongst the lunch rushes and après crowds. Hearty turns were as plentiful as happy tunes as the mountain received nearly 20 inches of snowfall over the course of the three-day gathering.

“Some of the bands were spotted skiing the fluff on their way to the festival site, then delivering sets inspired by the wintery wizardry of Mother Nature. Everyone was aligned, everyone was satiated, the tribe grows—we can’t wait for Squaw Valley,” says festival founder, organizer and enthusiastic festival attendee, Scotty Stoughton.

Overall stoke remained high throughout the weekend. Warren Miller Entertainment staffers reported noodle dancing, one minor, yet noticeable case of facial windburn, and an incident involving a flask cap falling from a chairlift, resulting in a commitment to drinking a lot of whiskey quite quickly. It just doesn’t get much better than skiing, bluegrass and an endless crowd of friendly faces. Thanks for the good times WinterWonderGrass.
